Holy Loch
Holy Loch
The Holy Loch is the sheltered sea loch that opens off the Firth of Clyde beside Kirn, Sandbank, Ardnadam and Kilmun, just a couple of miles from Dunoon, and gives the whole area its distinctive, sheltered feel.
It has a long history: once home to a medieval chapel giving it its name, then a shipbuilding yard, and later - during and after the Cold War - a US Navy submarine base, whose legacy still shapes local memory even though the base closed in the early 1990s.
Today it's a peaceful spot for sailing, watersports and gentle walks along its shore, with Holy Loch Marina at Sandbank as its main hub for boating activity.
